DIY house washing can make sense for light dirt on sound siding you can comfortably reach from the ground. Professional washing is worth considering when you want the whole exterior cleaned, have extensive organic buildup, or need help assessing access and weathered finishes. Compare the same scope—and include your preparation, equipment and cleanup time.

DIY vs. professional house washing at a glance

For a Halifax or HRM homeowner, the decision is about the size and difficulty of the job as well as the price. A quick rinse of one wall and a full exterior wash are different amounts of work.

On a phone, swipe the comparison table to see all three columns.

When washing it yourself is reasonable

A small, ground-level area with ordinary dust or dirt may be a manageable maintenance task. Start by identifying the siding and checking its care guide. Ply Gem recommends a garden hose and soft-bristled brush for moderate dirt on its siding; James Hardie recommends low-pressure water and a soft nonmetal brush for its products. [1] [2]

Consider DIY when you already have suitable tools, can keep stable footing and have time to follow the instructions. Choose an inconspicuous test area first and inspect the result when dry. If the finish changes, material comes loose or the marks do not respond as expected, stop and reassess instead of increasing pressure or scrubbing harder.

When a professional wash is worth considering

A full house brings more details into the job: upper siding, shaded elevations, soffits, gutters, frames, landscaping and access around the building. Hiring a professional can make sense when completing all of that work yourself would require equipment, reach or time you do not have.

DIY may fit

A small, reachable section; known siding; light dirt; a sound finish; suitable tools already available.

Ask for a quote

Several elevations, higher areas, widespread green buildup, difficult access or a preference for one coordinated visit.

Assess first

Chalky or peeling finishes, loose siding, open joints, leaks or unfamiliar staining. Confirm what can be cleaned before either approach.

Ask the contractor about their method, current insurance, surface inspection and what happens if an area needs to be excluded. A professional label alone does not answer those questions. For chalky finishes, our siding oxidation guide explains why washing and restoration are different decisions.

Compare the real cost—not just the equipment rental

For DIY, list what you actually need to buy or rent: the approved cleaner, suitable brush or applicator, hose accessories and required protective equipment. Add collection and return time for rentals, moving belongings, cleaning each elevation and putting everything away. Tools you already own change that calculation.

Then compare that total with a quote for the same surfaces. Include every elevation, trim details and any special treatment you expect. Use Yellow Wash’s current instant or custom quote for your property type and size; a general starting price cannot establish what your house will cost.

For timing, Yellow Wash generally completes routine house washes in about 1–1½ hours, with the actual time depending on size, buildup, access and preparation. Ask for the expected window for your home. A first-time DIY wash should include planning and cleanup in its time budget, not only the time spent spraying.

What does Yellow Wash do differently?

For house washing, Yellow Wash uses a dedicated soft-washing system to apply suitable treatment for algae and other organic buildup. We do not use a pressure washer to apply the house wash to siding. The cleaning plan still depends on the material, coating and condition; low pressure does not make every product suitable for every surface.

Our house-wash scope covers accessible, suitable siding plus gutter shells, exposed downspouts, fascia, soffits, window and door frames, garage doors and the other details in our full house-wash inclusion guide. It includes a light exterior glass rinse. Dedicated window cleaning, roof treatment, decks, driveways and patios are separate services.

A real full-wall result

Move the slider to compare the buildup across this wall before and after Yellow Wash cleaning. Look along the siding courses and underneath the roof overhang.

These are two stages of one professional cleaning job. They show the visible change on this particular wall; they do not measure how a DIY wash would have performed.

The useful takeaway is coverage: decide whether your goal is to tidy one reachable area or clean the included surfaces around the whole house. See more on our house-washing service page.

The checks that matter whichever option you choose

  • Follow the exact surface instructions. Ply Gem warns against spraying upward behind siding and against excessive cleaner concentrations or scrubbing. James Hardie advises against high-pressure power washing on its siding. Those instructions are product-specific. [1] [2]
  • Use products as labelled. Follow dilution, protective-equipment and surrounding-area precautions. Health Canada advises against mixing household cleaning products. Do not combine bleach with other household cleaners. [3]
  • Keep access manageable. Close windows, clear movable belongings and identify damaged seals, open joints and electrical fixtures. If the job needs climbing, overreaching or an awkward spray angle, arrange a suitable access assessment.
  • Choose suitable conditions. For a fall wash in Halifax, check the forecast and product temperature requirements. Reschedule if freezing conditions or poor footing could make the work unsuitable. Do not rush a wash simply to meet an equipment-return deadline.

Cleaning also has limits. Bonded black specks, oxidation and worn paint may remain after ordinary washing. Identify those concerns before spending more on another product or another visit. For a closer look at cleaning methods, read soft washing vs. pressure washing.
