For a home with visibly dirty siding and a broad front driveway, start with the house wash and driveway. If those already look clean, move the front entrance or windows to the top of your list. The best visual improvement comes from cleaning the noticeable buildup on your property—not booking every service.

This is Yellow Wash’s editorial ranking for street-facing appearance, based on the area visible, how noticeable the buildup is and what visitors see as they approach. It is not a customer survey, a measured brightness comparison or a promise of increased property value. Repairs and urgent maintenance take priority over appearance.

The ranking at a glance

Use this order as a starting point, then move a job up when the condition of your home warrants it. On a phone, swipe the table to see both columns.

PriorityMove it higher when…
1. House washingGreen buildup or grime is visible across large areas of siding.
2. Driveway cleaningThe driveway fills much of the view from the street.
3. Front steps and walkwayThe approach to the door is the most noticeably dirty area.
4. Exterior window cleaningProminent front glass looks dull, spotted or marked.
5. Specialist gutter brighteningDark marks remain on gutter faces after routine cleaning.
6. Roof treatmentA visible roof slope has growth or staining needing assessment.
7. Natural wood fence cleaningAn eligible front or side fence dominates the view.

These are seven areas of work to consider, not seven services every house needs. Several exterior details are already part of a house wash; confirm the scope before adding anything separately.

1. House washing: start with the largest visible surface

Illustrative siding example: inspect broad walls and shaded areas for visible buildup.

A wide wall of green or dirty siding can draw attention even when the garden is tidy. That makes house washing our first choice when buildup is spread across the facade. Look at the front and the side visible from the road, rather than judging only the wall nearest the door.

Yellow Wash’s house wash includes suitable siding, gutter shells, exposed downspouts, fascia, soffits, window and door frames, and garage doors. Those details help the exterior look consistent. See the full inclusion guide before pricing them twice.

Check first: the material and finish. For example, James Hardie recommends low-pressure water and a soft nonmetal brush for its siding, rather than high-pressure washing. [1] Cleaning also does not reverse worn paint or siding oxidation.

2. Driveway cleaning: improve the broad foreground

Illustrative driveway example: assess the large foreground area visible from the street.

A driveway can occupy as much of the street view as the lower half of the house. If it is visibly dirty, cleaning only the siding may leave the approach looking unfinished. Move this job above the house wash when the walls are already clean but the driveway dominates the view.

Match expectations to the surface. Yellow Wash uses material-specific driveway cleaning: concrete cleaning, a controlled low-pressure rinse for asphalt, and cleaning of stone or interlock surfaces and joints. A rinse does not turn old asphalt into new pavement. Flag oil stains separately rather than assuming ordinary cleaning will erase them.

Check first: loose pavers, damaged surfaces and joint condition. Yellow Wash does not offer sanding or re-leveling; arrange any required follow-up work separately.

3. Front steps and walkway: follow the visitor’s route

Illustrative entrance: inspect the steps and paving as well as the door area.

Visitors see the approach at close range. Dark step edges, dirty risers and buildup around a landing can stand out more than a less-visible wall. If you have a limited budget and the rest of the house looks presentable, this can be a focused place to start.

Specify the full route: walkway, step treads, risers and landing. Tell us whether the surfaces are concrete, stone, brick or wood, and disclose coatings or damaged areas. Ask for these surfaces explicitly; they are not automatically included in a house wash.

Check first: whether dirt is the issue or the surface needs repair. For jointed paving, our patio and paver service explains the cleaning scope and separate sanding considerations.

4. Exterior window cleaning: give prominent glass its own finish

Illustrative window example: examine prominent glass separately from the surrounding siding.

Large front windows, sidelights and bay windows deserve a closer look. If marks on the exterior glass remain the main distraction, dedicated window cleaning can be a better next step than another wall wash.

A Yellow Wash house wash includes a light rinse of exterior glass; dedicated window cleaning provides a more thorough finish. These are different scopes. Coordinate the sequence if both are booked so later work does not dirty finished glass again. With a purified-water clean, check the windows after they dry.

Check first: which side of the glass carries the mark. Exterior cleaning does not remove interior fingerprints or repair a failed glazing unit.

5. Specialist gutter brightening: assess persistent dark marks

Illustrative gutter example: persistent marks on the outside face may need a separate assessment.

White gutters form a strong line around the house. If their faces still show dark streaks after ordinary washing, ask whether a separate brightening treatment is appropriate. This is a targeted finishing decision, not a reason to pay again for routine gutter-shell cleaning that was already included.

Check first: whether the issue is removable staining or a weathered coating. Request an assessment through the custom quote option and agree on the expected improvement. Gutter brightening is not cleaning debris from inside the gutters, repairing leaks or repainting them.

6. Roof treatment: important visually, but allow time

Illustrative roof example: visible growth calls for an assessment and time for gradual treatment results.

On a home with a steep, street-facing roof, staining or growth can be very noticeable. Move roof assessment higher if that is the dominant concern. Keep it separate from a last-minute cosmetic clean: Yellow Wash roof-treatment results develop gradually, and clearing time varies with conditions.

ARMA warns against power washing asphalt roofing and advises checking the shingle manufacturer’s recommendations. [2] Use our roof-cleaning service to request an assessment, and read what happens after moss treatment before choosing a date for photos or an event.

Check first: roofing material and condition. Cleaning does not repair a leak or establish remaining roof life. Cedar requires its own material-specific review.

7. Natural wood fence cleaning: finish the visible boundary

Illustrative fence example: confirm the wood is unpainted and unstained before booking.

A front fence or a long side fence can frame the whole property. Move it up the list when its buildup is obvious from the street; keep it lower when it is hidden behind the house.

Yellow Wash’s standard fence-cleaning service is for unstained, unpainted wood and includes cleaning, controlled rinsing and a brightener finish. Confirm the existing finish before booking. Do not assume a grey fence is simply dirty or that cleaning will make every board the same colour.

Choose your first job in five minutes

  • Take one wide photo from a safe viewpoint. Include the house, approach and visible boundary. Use the same view when comparing the result later.
  • Pick the most noticeable buildup. Start with what catches your eye in the photo, then walk toward the entrance and check the close-up details.
  • Check what is already bundled. House-wash trim and gutter shells should not be mistaken for separate routine jobs. Confirm specialist work and exclusions.
  • Match the timing to the outcome. For an autumn appointment in Halifax or HRM, discuss weather, drying and access. Leave flexibility for rescheduling, and allow longer for gradual roof-treatment results.

Build a cleaning plan around your home

Send Yellow Wash your address and a wide exterior photo, then identify the two or three areas you most want improved. Start with the quote tool for supported residential services; use the custom option for unusual staining, access or a combined scope needing review.
